About

Haleema Bharoocha is a #GenZ changemaker committed to building a world free of gender-based violence, named on She the People’s list of 25 Under 25: Women of Color to Watch.

Following the teachings of the Quran which says “stand firm in justice even against yourself and your parents,” Haleema speaks truth to power, and advocates for the needs of her community.

Her approach to systems change is exemplified in her work as the former Advocacy Director at Alliance for Girls where she is co-lead phase one of the first youth-driven initiative, Not One More Girl to address gender-based violence on the 5th largest public transportation system in the country. This initiative centers on cultural strategy, policy change, community feedback, and youth-led research. Since then, she authored Ride Fearlessly: A Framework for Reimagining Transit Safety, a report that centers on inclusive safety programs that move beyond policing.

She believes in the power of people to make a positive change. As a social impact consultant facilitates equity-focused workshops to equip people with the tools to make change, on topics including bystander intervention, community safety, Islamophobia, racial equity, professional development, and gender justice and has trained over 1,800 people.

Haleema graduated from Seattle University at age 19 with a BA in Sociology. She founded the Gender Justice Center, a student-led community center serving gender non-conforming, transgender, and female-identifying students while at Seattle U.

Haleema is currently pursuing her Master in Public Policy at the nation’s #1 ranked policy school, UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy.

Haleema is a former County Commissioner on the Commission on the Status of Women. She is an alum of the Solis Policy Institute and the Greenlining Leadership Academy. Haleema’s commitment to gender justice comes from her lived experience and from the dire needs of her community.
