Haleema Bharoocha is a #GenZ changemaker, named on She the People’s list of 25 Under 25: Women of Color to Watch.
As a nationally recognized transportation policy leader, Haleema has pioneered efforts to create more equitable transportation. She brings valuable experience from organizations like the American Public Transportation Association, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and Transform.
Haleema authored “Ride Fearlessly: A Framework for Reimagining Transit Safety” and co-led "Not One More Girl," a groundbreaking youth-driven initiative combating gender-based violence on BART, the nation's 5th largest public transportation system. This initiative influenced California's SB 1161 transit safety bill, which is now considered a national model.
Haleema's diverse project portfolio includes regional improvements to paratransit, quick-build traffic calming pilot design, analyzing the equity implications of greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies, ensuring equitable access to federal funds for small businesses in clean energy, and increasing micro-mobility adoption in urban settings through a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform.
As a social impact consultant, Haleema facilitates equity-focused workshops to equip people with the tools to drive change. Her workshops focus on bystander intervention, Islamophobia, professional development, and gender justice. She has trained over 2,000 people. Haleema was a graduate instructor at UC Berkeley for two years, teaching various undergraduate and graduate courses.
Haleema earned her Master of Public Policy at the nation’s top-ranked policy school, UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy.
Haleema graduated from Seattle University at age 19 with a BA in Sociology. While at Seattle U, she founded the Gender Justice Center, a student-led center serving gender non-conforming, transgender, and female-identifying students.
Haleema is a former County Commissioner on the Commission on the Status of Women and an alum of the Solis Policy Institute and the Greenlining Leadership Academy.
